Chemistry 245: Intermediate Synthetic Chemistry Laboratory

Pre-requisite: Either (a) CHEM 203 or (b) CHEM 233 and CHEM 235.

Office hours: Printed inside of the laboratory manual for the course.  Sporadic drop-ins okay, but may have to wait as Dr. Wickenden is on the floor during experiments for instructional and safety reasons.

Chemistry 245 is a 1 credit laboratory course which is designed to accompany the organic lecture course CHEM 213.   This course is offered only during Term 2 of the winter session.  CHEM 245 will emphasize synthetic transformations, the purification of the resulting product(s), and the characterization of the resulting products using modern spectroscopic equipment.  To instruct students on how to interpret the data they collect, a one-hour weekly spectroscopy tutorial is also part of this course.  While not required, it is strongly recommended that students attend these weekly tutorials.  Many of the experiments performed in CHEM 245 are considered “organometallic” transformations.

Required materials include the Chemistry 245 Laboratory Manual, 1st edition by Wickenden (included inside this manual are the laboratory notebook pages), and the lab text “Laboratory Techniques in Organic Chemistry, 4th edition by Mohrig, Alberg, Hofmeister, Schatz and Hammond”.  The laboratory manual will be sold by the Department of Chemistry, while the laboratory textbook is sold by the UBC Bookstore.  Students are also expected to have a 100% cotton knee-length lab coat, safety glasses and nitrile gloves.  All of these items are sold by the Department of Chemistry, and are not required for the first laboratory period.

Student evaluation is roughly based on laboratory work and performance (50%), tutorial work including quizzes (20%) and a final written exam (30%).

Please note that laboratories and tutorials often begin in the first week of January.  Absence due to an extended winter holiday break will not be accepted as reasons to miss these classes.
