Abstract

Whereas the spur model of positronium formation enjoys widespread acceptance, the analogous model for muonium does not. Recent data has emerged from studies of rare systems, such as the superfluid state of liquid helium, the a phase of solid nitrogen and liquid Ne, in which muonium atoms form in a ’delayed’ manner and with yields that are influenced by the application of longitudinal electric fields. Charge neutralization is evidently responsible for the formation of these muonium atoms; but, it is suggested here, the electrons involved have escaped the spurs. so these are extra-spur processes not intra-spur ones.
