Outreach and Alumni Activities in 2023-24

PAST OUTREACH AND ALUMNI ACTIVITIES FOR 2024:

                                      SCIENCE RENDEZVOUS 2024

Science Rendezvous was a huge success! Thank you to all who attended, the chemistry department was buzzing with curiosity and excitement.

This years event featured 3 demo shows:

Fun with Colours – Dr. Richard Kil led an exciting show which demonstrated how fireworks get their colour.

Fun with Materials – Dr. Mark MacLachlan showed us how to make a salad in 10 seconds using liquid nitrogen.

Fun with Fuels - Dr. Jay Wickenden blew the audience away by blowing up a balloon with fire!

Hands on chemistry activities such as slime making also took place and guests had the opportunity to see liquid nitrogen ice cream being made, then got to sample it!

Stay tuned to hear what we have in store for next year!

                              CHEMISTRY ALUMNI REUNION 2023-2024

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Spring Alumni reunion! We were pleased to welcome alumni back to campus along with current members of the Chemistry department to hear engaging presentations from Drs. Namchuck, Nichols, and Chile.

Details for our next reunion will be announced at a later date. Provide your contact information to keep up-to-date with UBC Alumni here.

                        GREATER VANCOUVER REGIONAL SCIENCE FAIR

We had so much fun welcoming Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair students to our department!

Students learned how ice cream can be made from scratch using liquid nitrogen, how a 3D printer works (and watched it print!), and so much more.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SCIENCE

To celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Department of Chemistry hosted an "International Day of Girls and Women in Chemistry" day long event. The day started with experiment demonstrations and was followed by a panel discussion featuring distinguished women in chemistry. The day concluded with tours of chemistry research labs.

This event was an opportunity for girls and female identifying individuals to learn more about chemistry, speak to chemistry graduate students and be inspired by those working in chemistry.
