Abstract

High-resolution solid-state Si-29 CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy has been used to characterize methyl functionalized silica gels prepared by the copolymerization of tetraethoxysilane and methyltriethoxysilane. One-dimensional Si-29 CP/MAS NMR indicates that the two components are present in the correct proportions in the gel, but it is not sensitive to the degree of mixing. A two-dimensional H-1/Si-29 correlation experiment clearly demonstrates that the two components are not phase-separated, but are mixed in the final gel.
