Abstract

The design and synthesis of inorg.-org. hybrid materials through self-assembly are rapidly emerging due to their potential use in the field of nanotechnol. as mol. information storage devices, sensors, and electronic switches. Grid-like metal complexes, in particular, have been found to show very interesting structural and optical properties. Recently, dipyrromethenes which can form neutral complexes with various metal ions have been introduced as novel ligands. The bisdipyrromethene metal complexes featuring double-helical structures or triangular structures have been reported previously. Ligands, generated by the spacers connecting dipyrromethene groups, control the structural features of the self-assembled mols. The first neutral Zn(II) [2×2] grid complexes of the building blocks where two terminal dipyrromethenes were connected by a rigid spacer show unique packing arrangements and optical propertities.
