Congratulations to the UBC Chemistry Department’s Undergraduate Chemistry Society (UCS) on receiving Honourable Mention for the 2013 Student Chapter Merit Award of the Canadian Society for Chemistry. The Student Chapter Merit Award is offered as a means of recognizing and encouraging initiative and originality in Student Chapter programming in chemistry.
The UCS has been a longstanding and active student group in the Chemistry department. Currently there are over 260 general members including a 17 person executive, listed below. This past year, the UCS has continued holding annual events in the department for undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and staff members to attend, including Imagine Day festivities, 2-Buck-a-Beaker mixers, the Chemistry Undergraduate Research Conference (CURC), the Chemistry Forum, Meet-Your-Professor nights, and UBC Science Week Events. Also, UCS has newly launched an event called Lab Tours this year, which attracted many students with the opportunity to see high-end research facilities. Many of the executive students are also active volunteers at our Chemistry Outreach Events, and hold positions in research labs throughout the department.
A plaque from the CSC will be presented at the 96th Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition taking place in Quebec City from May 26-30th, 2013 for this achievement.
