Dr. Ido Levin will join the Department of Chemistry on Aug 1, 2025, jointly appointed with the Department of Mathematics.
Dr. Levin is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Keller Lab at the University of Washington. He attended The Hebrew University of Jerusalem where he completed his BSc, MSc and PhD. He is the recipient of a Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholar Award in recognition of his academic and research achievements and he has been supported by the Washington Research Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship (2022-present) to pursue his postdoctoral research.
About Dr. Levin’s research:
Nature's most fascinating organisms - from swimming jellyfish to blooming flowers - inspire our mission to create the next generation of soft machines. By unraveling how these organisms shape themselves, Levin’s group is pioneering new approaches, combining geometrical modeling with novel materials and innovative fabrication.
The Levin Group’s research operates at two scales. At the macro level, they develop self-shaping structures using responsive materials like hydrogels and elastomers, studying how they transform and interact with their environment to achieve functions like movement. At the microscopic level, they investigate synthetic lipid membranes, exploring how patterns of different lipids influence their mechanical properties and morphology. This dual-scale approach, together with a rigorous mathematical analysis, advances understanding of biological processes while enabling revolutionary soft machines - from medical devices that can safely interact with the human body to adaptive structures that respond to environmental changes.
Welcome Dr. Levin!
