Corinna Schindler and Corey Stephenson to join UBC Chemistry Faculty

We are pleased to welcome Professor Corinna Schindler and Professor Corey Stephenson to the faculty, jointly appointed in the Department of Chemistry and Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, starting in summer 2024.

Prof. Schindler earned her Diploma degree at the Technical University of Munich and her PhD at ETH Zurich working with Erick Carreira. She completed postdoctoral work at Harvard University with Eric Jacobsen and joined the faculty at the University of Michigan in 2013. Her research focuses on the development of new methodologies utilizing earth abundant metals, the synthesis of natural products and investigation into the biological activity of natural products and their analogs. She has received many awards for her work including the ACS Award in Pure Chemistry, an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship and NSF Career Award.

Prof. Stephenson completed his BSC in Applied Chemistry at the University of Waterloo, and his PhD at the University of Pittsburgh working with Peter Wipf. He carried out postdoctoral work at ETH Zurich working with Erick Carreira, then began his independent career at Boston University before moving to the University of Michigan in 2013. He will be appointed as a Canada Excellence Research Chair at UBC. His research is centered on the development of new strategies and methodologies for the synthesis of natural products, in particular using photochemistry for electron transfer chemistry. He was selected as an ACS Arthur C. Cope Scholar, won the Pfizer Green Chemistry Award, Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship and NSF Career Award.
