Two successful alumni events bring May to a close in the Chemistry Department. It has been a busy month, first with our inaugural Alumni Reunion on Saturday May 12, followed by our family event for UBC’s Alumni Weekend on Saturday May 26. Both days featured perfect weather - uncharacteristic for Vancouver – bringing plenty of sunshine, energy and excitement to our events.
Our first ever Alumni Reunion brought together a diverse group of Chemistry alumni with degrees spanning more than six decades. The reunion featured department tours, guest speakers and a cocktail reception in the Abdul Ladha Science Student Centre. The two guest speakers, both former UBC chemistry majors, were chocolate educator Eagranie Yuh (BSc '03) and science journalist Nicola Jones (BSc '97).

The reunion was followed by our family-friendly Open House held as a part of the UBC-wide Alumni Weekend. Hundreds of UBC Alumni and their children dropped in throughout the afternoon to learn about chemistry and enjoy the many hands-on activities. The main floor of Chemistry D-Block was filled with demo tables and activity stations where kids of all ages made slime and lava lamps, learned about chromatography and dilatant materials, created molecular structures, and of course cooled off with our infamous liquid nitrogen ice cream.
