Abstract

X-ray photoelectron spectra of the first-stage acceptor graphite intercalation compounds C7SO3F, C14SO3F.HSO3F, C12SO3CF3, and C8SbF6 are reported. The carbon is core electron binding energy is shifted to slightly lower energies relative to graphite for all four acceptor GICs, largely on account of a Fermi level shift to lower energy upon oxidative intercalation. The shifts in binding energies for the C 1s core electron are compared to those of various fluorinated graphites and to shifts reported previously for related acceptor GICs. In addition, the O 1s, F 1s, and S 2p3/2 XPS spectra are reported. Comparison to those of simple ionic salts formed by the intercalate anions allows an estimation of the Fermi level shift in the acceptor GICs.
