UBC Chemistry Helps Team Canada Win Big at the 2024 International Chemistry Olympiad

This years 56th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, proved to be extremely successful for team Canada, as the team brought home 1 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals. This is Canada’s best performance in the Olympiad since 2011 and the competition was fierce as 327 students from 90 countries competed.

Harry Gong, Canada’s gold medal winner, finished 15th overall, making his performance the 4th best individual performance ever for Canada.

The 4 Canadian students were trained in the Department of Chemistry at UBC, using Guillaume Bussiere’s B450 lab for laboratory practice and room D300 for theoretical training. The team also participated in a training camp which was hosted in the department from July 3-20, 2024.

The Department of Chemistry is extremely proud of the teams success and is honoured to be a part of their journey to victory. Well done team Canada!
