Ways to Give
You can support UBC chemistry programs and students in many ways:
- Awards recognize students for excellence in non-academic areas such as volunteerism and leadership. Learn about how you can fund your award (see below).
- Scholarships recognize students for outstanding academic achievement.
- Bursaries support students with unmet financial needs.
- Prizes recognize students for academic excellence in a particular area of study, course or program.
- Fellowships recognize outstanding graduate students who demonstrate academic excellence and/or outstanding research productivity.
2 ways to fund an award
An award can be funded through an endowment or an annual gift:
- Endowments may be used to support an annual award in perpetuity. Your gift will be invested long term and the annual interest is distributed according to the terms of you have established. The minimum commitment for an endowed award is $50,000.
- Annual gifts or a single gift (which are disbursed over a period of time) may be used to fund an annual award. The minimum commitment for an annual award is $10,000. An initial pledge of $10,000 over two to five years is required to create a new named award.
Additional opportunities
There are many ways to support the Department of Chemistry. For more information about any of the ways to give listed below, or to discuss an opportunity or program you'd like to help establish, please contact us.
Gifts of Cash
Chemistry accepts gifts of cash of any value or currency. If you choose to donate a gift of cash, you'll receive a tax receipt for the full amount of your gift.
Gifts of Securities
Chemistry accepts donations of publicly traded securities including shares, bonds and mutual funds. If you choose this gift type, you will receive a tax receipt for the value of the publicly traded securities donated.
In 2006, the Federal Government eliminated the capital gains tax on publicly traded securities donated directly to a charity. Therefore, donors receive substantially greater tax saving when they donate publicly traded securities directly to UBC rather than donating the cash proceeds from the sale of these same securities.
The department accepts both electronic and certificate shares, as well as gifts of publicly traded options.
Give Online
You may donate online with your credit card via UBC's secure Online Gift Centre. You can sign up for a monthly giving program, make a one-time gift or pay an existing pledge online. You will receive a tax receipt for the full amount of your gift.
Matching Gifts
Many companies encourage their employees to contribute to charities by offering a "matching gift" program. This means the company will donate funds equal to your contribution to the same fund, effectively doubling the gift. Check with your employer to see if they offer a charitable gift matching program.
International Gifts
The Department of Chemistry is privileged to receive support from donors around the world. UBC has established international charitable foundations for donors living in the United States, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. These foundations help non-residents of Canada support UBC, while still maximizing tax credit in the donor's country of residence. Gifts made to UBC foundations flow directly to the University and are used as directed. No administration fees are deducted from your charitable gift.
Gifts-in-Kind
A gift-in-kind is a non-cash donation and includes items such as equipment, materials, computer programs and real estate. The Department of Chemistry welcomes any gifts-in-kind for which it has a use from individuals and companies. Tax receipts for the fair market price are issued once the gift has been appraised and received. Please contact us for more information on how to make a gift-in-kind.
Gift and Estate Planning
Your gift to the Department of Chemistry can advance your financial, philanthropic and estate planning goals. Planned gifts give back, allowing you to take advantage of sizable income, capital gains and estate deductions on your taxes. Planned gifts can also be much larger than other gifts, so you can leave a legacy that supports your passions and has lasting impact.
Planned giving is a charitable donation that is deferred into the future or to the time of one's passing. They have unique tax implications and we would be pleased to work with you to ensure your best interests are considered when creating a gift. The following are examples of planned giving opportunities:
- Charitable remainder trusts
- Bequests and wills
- Gift plus annuity plans
Please contact us for more information on making a planned gift.
