Congratulations to the following members of the Chemistry Department for being awarded a 2013 Faculty of Science Achievement Award late last week.

Congradulations to Akram Khodabandehloo, who has received the Four Year Doctoral Fellowship (4YF) from the University of British Coumbia.

Congratulations to Chang Liu, a PhD Candidate in the Chen group, who has just received a 2013 Analytical Chemistry Division Graduate Student Award in Honour of Walter Harris. The award will be presented following an award lecture given by Liu at the 96th Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition taking place in Quebec City from May 26-30th, 2013. Liu’s research is on the topic of novel continuous chemical purification platform development.

Congratulations to Professor Mark MacLachlan who was recently awarded a 2012 Killam Award for Excellence in Mentoring. The award recognizes research supervisors who have provided sustained mentorship to numerous graduate students while researching at the mid-career level. Furthermore, the Killam Award for Excellence in Mentoring is quite unique among other faculty awards, as statements provided by referees, such as past and present students, are highly regarded in the nomination process.

Congratulations to Professor Mark MacLachlan who was awarded the 2013 Strem Chemicals Award for Pure or Applied Inorganic Chemistry this last month. The award recognizes researchers who have demonstrated exceptional promise while working in Canada and who have made outstanding contributions to the inorganic chemistry community. Professor MacLachlan will be presented with this award at the 96^th Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition taking place in Quebec City from May 26-30...

Professor Michael Wolf was recently awarded a Major Thematic Grant from the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies. Dr. Wolf received the 5-year grant valued at $500,000 for the project “Nanomaterials for Alternative Energy Applications”.

Congratulations to Ruth Webster, a Postdoctoral Fellow under Laurel Schafer, who has received a Faculty of Science Postdoctoral Travel Award.

Congratulations to graduate student Angela Crane, who was awarded the Faculty of Science Achievement Award for her work with chemistry outreach. Angela is a member of the MacLachlan group and has been with the department since 2008.

Associate Professor Suzana Straus was recently awarded a Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship. These awards, granted by the European Commission, are designed to attract top-class researchers to work and undertake research in Europe with the ultimate goal of developing mutually-beneficial research cooperation between Europe and Canada.
