PhD Candidate wins Analytical Chemistry Summer Fellowship

Raymond Andersen awarded prestigious CIC Medal

Dr. Raymond Anderson, a faculty member of both the Chemistry and Earth and Ocean Sciences Departments at UBC, has received the 2012 CIC Medal. The CIC Medal is the most prestigious award granted by the Chemical Institute of Canada, and is given annually to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the science of chemistry in Canada.

Mark MacLachlan wins Killam Research Prize

Chemistry Professor Mark MacLachlan was awarded the 2011 Killam Research Prize in the Science/Applied Science category. This award recognizes Dr. MacLachlan’s outstanding research and scholarly contributions.

The UBC Killam Research Prizes, established in 1986, are awarded annually by the Office of the Vice President Research & International to the top campus researchers. Full-time faculty members are nominated by their peers and adjudicated by the Faculty Awards Committee.

PhD Student wins Inorganic Chemistry Research Award

Congratulations to Kevin Shopsowitz, a PhD student in the MacLachlan group, who received the Award for Graduate Research in Inorganic Chemistry by the Inorganic Division of the Chemical Institute of Canada.

Kevin will present his award lecture at the upcoming CSC Conference (Canadian Society of Chemistry) in Calgary from May 26-30, 2012.

Dr. Fryzuk receives the 2011 Killam Award for Excellence in Mentoring

Dr. Michael Fryzuk, Head of the Chemistry Department, recently recieved the 2011 Killam Award for Excellence in Mentoring. Awards were presented by Vice Provost David Farrar during the November congregation ceremonies.

UBC's Sustainability Research Fellowship

Dr. Laurel Schafer was awarded UBC's Sustainability Research Fellowship in recognition of catalyst development which focuses on atom-economic transformations that avoid the formation of wasteful byproducts

Congratulations to two students in the Chemistry Department:
Chang Liu, a fourth-year PhD student in Dr. Chen's research group, was recently awarded the Agnes and Gilbert Hooley Scholarship in Chemistry.

Undergraduate student Hart Plommer recieved the Muenster Memorial Merit Award for the 2010 Winter Term.

Chemistry Grad Student awarded Best Oral Presentation

This past June at the 94th annual Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition, UBC chemistry graduate student Lauren Keyes was awarded Best Oral Presentation in the Organometallics Reagents in Organic Synthesis Symposium. Danielle Covelli wins poster prize at ICBIC15

Danielle Covelli was awarded an honourable mention and a $250 prize from Helvetica Chimica Acta, for her poster presented during the 15th International Conference on Bioinorganic Chemistry (ICBIC15), held on campus at UBC in early August. Over 200 students were eligible for twelve poster prizes at the conference, with representation from across the world.

Studying the Structure of Proteins

Lawrence McIntosh has received a major grant from the Canadian Cancer Association for his research using NMR spectroscopy to study the structure of proteins involved in the regulation of gene expression.
